After the classroom, we head for the pool!

Open Water certification (OW)
This is the basic certification. It consists of about 16 hours of instruction.   Usually about 4 two-hour classroom sessions followed by two-hour pool sessions. This is the standard class, however MDS provides special arrangements and private instruction. 

The pool sessions teach you the skills you demonstrate on the open water weekend.   You are actually diving in the pool.  The classroom sessions give you a basic understanding of the following topics:

  • The Underwater World
  • Adapting to the Underwater World
  • The Dive Environment
  • Dive Accessories
  • Special Dive Tables & Computer Procedures

The open water weekend consists of 4 dives over two days practicing the same skills you learned while you were diving in the pool.

  • Mask flooding and clearing
  • Regulator recovery
  • Ascents/Descents
  • Buoyancy (Fin pivots)
  • and other skills

Program consists of:

  • 5 Knowledge Development sessions.
  • 5 Skills Development sessions in a pool or pool-like conditions.
  • 4 Scuba dives in open water.
  • Earns the PADI Open Water Diver certification  enabling you to buy/rent scuba equipment and dive without direct instructor supervision.
